Pipe insulation requires a protective layer to prevent contamination that would otherwise destroy the integrity of the insulation. The methodology of protecting insulation has changed over the years and PVC (Polyvinyl chloride) has become an industry standard and preferred product used by insulation contractors world-wide.

Mechanical insulation projects often demand different types of insulation solutions based on the application. In this piece we examine the differences between two types of insulation commonly used in mechanical insulation applications such as pipes, ducts and vessels.

One of the more frequently asked questions of our sales organization is "What is the difference between a Tek screw and a self-tapping"? It seems like such a silly question, but in the industrial insulation world it actually does matter. Confusion does exist on such a simple question. These screws are used in numerous mechanical insulation projects. Both types of screws are used for securing metal jacketing, aluminum and stainless elbows, along with T-Covers. 

Insulation can be classified in terms of both its type (including composition and internal structure) and its form (overall shape or application).

When evaluating insulation for a specific application, one of the first considerations is typically its thermal properties. The following definitions can be useful when determining if a product meets the application’s requirements:

Often, at GLT Products, we are questioned about PVC Jacketing.  As you might imagine, the most common question asked is, “what is it?”

 Let’s start with PVC: PVC stands for Poly Vinyl Chloride. PVC is the third most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer.  It comes in two basic forms, rigid and flexible.  PVC in its rigid form is made into a variety of products from pipe to windows, bottles to bank cards.  Flexible PVC is often used to replace rubber.  For the protection of pipe insulation, PVC is produced into sheets as thin as .010” and as thick as .040”.  It not only protects the insulation it is designed to cover but it also provides a neat, glossy, attractive finish.
